Chapter Seven

Evan was gone. A torrent of pain rose up inside Red filling her belly and swelling up to choke her. Leaving her immobile.

She hugged herself tight to keep the pain from rupturing her skin.

She got moving. Managing to strip her clothes off, shift to wolf, and crawl back into the bed. She curled up, nose to tail in a miserable ball. Memories burst in her heart like exploding jars. Memories of laughter. Love. And sex.

And they were joined by a hideous new memory—Evan’s chocolate eyes full of dark betrayal.

That moment of betrayal when hope turned to hurt. When she didn’t tell him he could stay. Or that she wanted him to stay. That she loved him. The words had been full in her mouth ready to spill out past her lips. She should have told him but she swallowed them instead.

How could she tell him to stay? Or that she loved him? How could she expect him to understand when he didn’t know the most important thing about her? It wasn’t just her heart or her life or her future she risked here. She risked the whole town’s exposure.

Her family’s hatred.

Exile.

If she told him everything she had no future. And if she didn’t? No future.

She stayed in wolf form for the rest of the morning, until the scent of Evan everywhere finally got to her and she decided to get the pine cleaner out. No one would ever be able to tell she’d had mind blowing sex in the cabin. Not Grandma, not her parents, not Seth. She scrubbed every last bit of scent she could find until her hands were raw and her nose burned.

It was when she found his shirt under the bed that the tears started. She was the tough little sister of three lupine brothers. She had no idea that anyone could cry like that, least of all her. Cry until she was wrung out. Cry until her nose bled. Cry until every last drop of moisture in her had turned to salt.

The rest of the excruciating long week-end wasn’t much better. She hid all day Saturday. Tossed and turned Saturday night.

Sunday she gave up, turned wolf, and started stalking Evan. She consoled her guilty conscience and told herself she was just doing her duty. She needed to see if he found any other evidence of the pack. It was a big fat lie.

And she knew it. Evan had told her his plan was to let the cameras sit for a week, undisturbed, to see if he could get any shots of the wolves. She had time before he discovered the destruction she’d wrecked on the cards. She convinced herself he needed protection. She had to make sure Seth and his cronies left him alone. Didn’t hunt him down and kill him for sport or revenge.

On Sunday Red trailed Evan with misery trailing her, but didn’t turn up any evidence of Seth. She knew her brother, knew his hot temper. He was mad at her but he was furious at Evan.
